The film, written and directed by Estevez (The Breakfast Club), follows a large group of homeless library patrons who refuse to leave the public library during the middle of a brutal cold front sweeping through the Midwestern city and while it starts as a non-violent sit-in, the situation escalates into a riotous standoff with the local police led by a no-nonsense crisis negotiator and an overly ambitious district attorney.
Estevez wrote through the summer and fall of 2008 and met with actors for the 16-character ensemble over the next nine years, assembling the crew of heavyweight stars for filming in January 2017 in Cincinnati, Ohio, diverting from the original plan to shoot in Los Angeles.

The cast features Estevez and Jena Malone (The Neon Demon) as the two librarians caught up in the middle of the situation, while Emmy-nominee Michael K. Williams (Hap and Leonard) will star as the leader of the homeless group. They are joined by Oscar-nominee Alec Baldwin (Mission: Impossible – Fallout) as the crisis negotiator, Golden Globe-nominee Christian Slater (Mr. Robot), Emmy-nominee Taylor Schilling (Orange is the New Black), Emmy-winner Jeffrey Wright (Westworld), Gabrielle Union (L.A.’s Finest) and Jacob Vargas (The 33).
The film had its first screenings at the Santa Barbara and Toronto International Film festivals and for the American Library Association, where it has earned very positive reviews from critics and audiences thus far.
The Public is set to hit theaters on April 5.
