Kevin Feige talks Avengers: Endgame

Marvel Studio’s Kevin Feige Talks Avengers: Endgame

Last night at the 76th annual Golden Globes, Black Panther didn’t take home any gold, but Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige was on-hand to talk about what’s already being called the biggest movie of 2019, Avengers: Endgame. The sequel will pick up after the devastating events of last year’s Avengers: Infinity War, and when talking to MTV News (via ComicBook.com) on the red carpet, he revealed some other interesting tidbits about the upcoming superhero epic.

First, despite audiences knowing that Avengers: Infinity War would have a direct sequel exploring the aftermath of Thanos’ (Josh Brolin) deadly snap, the title wasn’t revealed until last month after the first trailer surfaced. Prior to that, fans were left in the dark to speculate on what the title could mean.

Last night, Feige said that the title “was in place before we started developing the movie. Or just as we were developing it.” Considering these movies have been in production for nearly five years, the title was known for a while, which is exactly why Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) said that telling line just before he turned to dust. “So Doctor Strange says that line because we knew it was the title,” Feige confirmed.

Feige also said that all the promotional and marketing that we’ll see from the film in the coming months — including the surprise trailer we saw in December — will contain footage from the first 15 or 20 minutes of Avengers: Endgame.

As was the case with a lot of our films, this one in particular, being able to generate a lot of excitement without giving away one of the many, many, many secrets,” Feige said. “I think the Disney marketing team is the best in the world and we’ll be able to pull it off.”

More than anything, Feige seemed genuinely excited about the reaction that Avengers: Infinity War got when it hit theaters last April, and seems to enjoy the fact that the movie, and its soon-to-be-released follow-up, have stayed in the pop culture conversation for as long as it has.

That ending, which we had been working on for many years, and I do remember people, on all of the movies we’ve made and I’m sure on many of the movies we’ll make in the future, whenever the good guy wins, which is often — good guy, good woman, good hero wins — they go, ‘Eh, it’s kind of predictable. Good guy wins.’ Well, sometimes that’s fun. But for years I remember thinking, ‘I wonder what they’re going to do when they don’t?’ Because we knew that was coming. And it couldn’t have been better. The reaction was the best. The reaction. Was. The. Best.

Confirmed cast members for the untitled fourth Avengers film so far include Robert Downey Jr.Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Anthony Mackie, Paul Bettany, Elizabeth Olson, Jeremy Renner, Chadwick Boseman, Sebastian Stan, Don Cheadle, Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Zoe Saldana, Pom Klementieff, Benedict Cumberbatch, Benedict Wong, Sean Gunn, Tom Holland, Paul Rudd, Jon Favreau, Brie Larson, Karen Gillan, Gwyneth Paltrow, Evangeline Lilly, Katherine Langford and Josh Brolin.
