Aquaman becomes highest grossing DCEU movie after third #1 weekend
Warner Bros.’ Aquaman held onto the #1 spot at the domestic box office for the third weekend in a row. The latest chapter in the DCEU brought in $30.7 million for the weekend, giving it a domestic total of $259.7 million. Internationally the film brought in $56.2 million over the weekend giving it an international total of $681 million and giving it a global total of $940.7 million. Though it’s only the fifth highest grossing film in the cinematic universe in the US, the film is now the highest grossing DCEU movie worldwide, breezing past Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice which ended its run with $873.6 million. Directed by James Wan, Aquaman stars Jason Momoa, Amber Heard, Willem Dafoe, Patrick Wilson, Dolph Lundgren, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and Oscar winner Nicole Kidman.
Sony Pictures’ Escape Room opened in second place with a stronger than expected $18 million for the weekend. The PG-13 horror-thriller had a step down from director Adam Robitel’s previous film, Insidious: The Last Key, which opened in the same weekend last year. Escape Room stars Taylor Russell, Logan Miller, Deborah Ann Woll, Jay Ellis, Tyler Labine and Nik Dodani with Yorick van Wageningen.
Walt Disney Studios’ Mary Poppins Returns fell from second to third place, bringing in $15.8 million domestically for a total of $138.7 million. Internationally the film brought in another $23 million, giving it an international total of $119.2 million and a global total of $257.9 million. The cast of Mary Poppins Returns includes Emily Blunt, Emmy, Grammy and Tony Award winner Lin-Manuel Miranda, Ben Whishaw, Emily Mortimer and Julie Walters, with Colin Firth and Meryl Streep. Dick Van Dyke also returns for the film, directed by Rob Marshall.
Columbia Pictures/Sony Pictures Animation’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse held onto fourth place, adding another $13 million in the US and bringing the domestic total to $133.86 million. Internationally the film took in another $11.7 million for an international total of $141.5 million and giving it a global total of $275.36 million. Directed by Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey and Rodney Rothman, Spider-Verse features the voices of Shameik Moore, Jake Johnson, Hailee Steinfeld, Mahershala Ali, Brian Tyree Henry, Lily Tomlin, Luna Lauren Velez, Zoë Kravitz, John Mulaney, Kimiko Glenn with Nicolas Cage, Kathryn Hahn and Liev Schreiber.
Paramount’s Bumblebee fell to fifth place, bringing in $12.775 million for the weekend. The film now sits at $97.128 million domestically. Internationally, Bumblebee added $82.7 million for an international total of $192 million and a global total of $289 million. Directed by Travis Knight, the film stars Hailee Steinfeld and John Cena, with the voices of Dylan O’Brien, Peter Cullen, Angela Bassett, and Justin Theroux.
Warner Bros.’ The Mule, the latest directorial and acting effort from Clint Eastwood, dipped just 25% and added another $9 million to its haul. The film now sits at $81 million domestically. The film is proving to be a bigger success than some of Eastwood’s other films, outgrossing the likes of 15:17 to Paris, Jersey Boys, and J. Edgar, though still well behind the likes of American Sniper and Gran Torino.
Annapurna Pictures Dick Cheney biopic Vice brought in $5.8 million. The film now sits at $29.79 million domestically. Directed by Adam McKay, the film’s ensemble cast includes Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Steve Carrell, Sam Rockwell, Jesse Plemons, Alison Pill, Lily Rabe, Tyler Perry, Justin Kirk, Lisagay Hamilton, Shea Whigham, and Eddie Marsan.
