In the previous episode of Amazon’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Midge was on TV, but Susie antagonized Sophie Lennon again. In the season finale, things were still tense between Midge and Susie.
Permission
Benjamin had come over to the Weissmans’ to ask for Abe’s permission to marry Midge. Considering everything that happened with Midge’s first marriage, including Joel not asking permission at all, Abe subjected Benjamin to intense scrutiny. Despite the questions, Rose and Midge started planning the wedding. Rose even consulted a psychic about Midge.
Unfortunately, it was all for naught. Shy Baldwin called Midge and offered her the opening spot on his tour. She would be gone for six months as they toured the U.S. and Europe. Midge agreed immediately. However, when she arrived home with her new tour wardrobe, Abe told Midge he was giving Benjamin permission. The look on Midge’s face said it all: there would be no wedding.
Spoiling for a Fight
Abe asked Midge what she had said during her D.C. performance. Midge explained the joke, but promised she couldn’t have said more about what he does because she doesn’t know. Abe called a meeting with the Bell Labs people to assure them that Midge said nothing. They still thought that the situation with Midge showed he lacked discretion and was a security risk. Abe railed against them and recalled how he used to protest against people like them.
At home, Abe told Rose he was going to quit Bell Labs and give up his tenure at Columbia. Rose reminded him that Columbia owned their apartment. Abe also told her that Midge wasn’t going to marry Benjamin. Finally, we saw Abe consulting a lawyer.
Eating Sh*t
During her latest gig, Midge started talking about pregnancy on stage since Imogene had given birth, but she was quickly ushered off the stage. The booker told her saying “pregnant” was foul.
Sophie Lennon summoned Susie for a meeting. Sophie told her she wanted Susie to be her manager because of the way she had fought for Midge. When Midge came over to celebrate going on tour with Shy, Susie didn’t tell her.
Mommy’s Friend
Joel was still working at Maisel & Roth until he figured out what he wanted to do. He had brought Ethan and Esther to the office. Ethan told Joel that he had met “Mommy’s friend” at the park. Joel was angry that he didn’t know about Ethan meeting a man Midge was seeing. Midge tried to explain that she had no control over it. Joel went to the park with Archie to hit softballs and vent. Joel told Archie that he wanted to own a club.
Midge went to Lenny’s gig on Steve Allen’s show to support him. He performed a bit about a couple that broke up and were all alone and unhappy despite being famous. Midge immediately went to see Joel. She told him everything was different now that she was going on tour. She would be all alone. Midge wanted to be with someone who loved her, and they kissed.
