Said to be in negotiations last fall, Johnny Depp is officially attached to headline Wally Pfister’s directorial debut Transcendence. With a shoot scheduled to begin in April, Depp will also be able to headline the Whitey Bulger biopic Black Mass, set to begin production this summer.
Although no official plot details have been revealed, recent reports suggest that Transcendence will feature Depp as a scientist who uploads his consciousness into a computer.
The film is being financed and produced by Alcon Entertainments Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove and will be released by Warner Bros. The film will also be produced by Straight Up Films Annie Marter, Marisa Polvino and Kate Cohen along with David Valdes. Pfister will direct from newcomer Jack Paglens screenplay, which was developed with Annie Marter, with the most recent draft by Noah Oppenheim. Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas are serving as executive producers. Straight Ups Regency Boies will co-produce.
Depp will next be seen starring in Walt Disney Pictures The Lone Ranger, directed by Gore Verbinski and debuting July 3, 2013. The film is produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and Verbinski along with Depp and Christi Dembrowskis Infinitum Nihil banner. Infinitum Nihils credits also include Hugo, Dark Shadows and The Rum Diary.
